BIOLOGY
INTRODUCTION
Biology is the study of living things.
In biology there are seven main characteristics. All organisms undergo this seven characteristics.
The seven characteristics are:
1. Respiration
2. Reproduction
3. Nutrition
4. Growth
5. Irritability
6. Excretion
7. Movement
We shall briefly define this characteristics of living.
RESPIRATION
Respiration is the breakdown of glucose (complete or incomplete) in the presence or absence of oxygen to release energy.
when glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen, it is completely broken down and a large amount of energy is produced.
But the break down of glucose in the absence of oxygen, small amount of energy is produce and the glucose too is partially broken down.
REPRODUCTION
Reproduction is the process of production of new individuals (offspring of their kind) in order to ensure survival and continuity of a specie.
NUTRITION
This is the way organisms obtain their food to provide energy for the activities and materials for the building up body (health) and maintaining them (repair).
GROWTH
This is the process of irreversible increase in size or mass of an organism by producing more cells.
IRRTABILITY
This is the process by which organisms detect and respond to changes in the environment known as stimuli eg. change in temperature, sound, etc.
EXCRETION
Excretion is the elimination of metabolic waste which if allowed in an organism can poison the cells.
MOVEMENT
Movement is the process of displacement of an organism or its parts from one place to another. this enable the organism to look for food, shelter, reproductive mates and to escape from danger.
