BLOOD CLOTTING
Platelets are the blood cells responsible for the process of blood clotting in the body.
how do they carry out this function?
when ever we have an injury and blood start oozing out, platelets which are responsible for blood clotting releases and enzyme called Thromboplastin.
this Thromboplastin react with Calcium ions and vitamin k to convert inactive plasma proteins called Prothrombin to an active form called Thrombin.
Thrombin convert soluble plasma proteins called Fibrinogens to and an insoluble form called Fibrin.
Fibrin forms a mesh network of fibres across the wound or injury, trapping blood cells and forming clots hence preventing blood lost.
Phagocytes comes to the area of injury to engulf and destroy any pathogen that want to enter the body through the wound or injury.
